The last two hours of daylight, with the Arch turning copper and the sun dropping into the Pacific.

Cabo faces south, so the sun sets over open ocean beside Land's End. From a boat you get the angle nobody on the beach gets: the Arch in silhouette, the sea lions on the rocks, and the Pacific going gold behind them.

Most sunset charters are two hours. You leave the marina about an hour and a half before sunset, round Land's End to the Pacific side while the light is warm, and come back into the bay as the sky turns. Four hours gives you time to anchor and swim first.

How the day goes

A private sunset cruise in Cabo, stop by stop.

A typical plan. Your captain adapts it to the sea and to what your group wants.

  1. Meet at the slip

The crew welcomes you aboard and runs a short safety briefing. Drinks go on ice.

  2. Cast off

Out of the marina past the cruise ship dock, into the bay.

  3. Land's End

Pelican Rock, the sea lion colony and the Arch, close enough for photos.

  4. The Pacific side

Around the tip to Divorce Beach, where the swell rolls in from the open ocean.

  5. Facing the sun

Along the Pacific cliffs toward the old Cabo Falso lighthouse as the light goes warm.

  6. Sunset

The sun touches the water. The captain slows down so everyone gets the shot.

  7. Back at the dock

Back around Land's End and into the marina as the town lights come on.

Worth knowing

  • Sunset time moves by about an hour and a half through the year. The planner suggests the right departure for your date.
  • The bow of the Sea Ray 55 and the flybridge of the Sea Ray 40 give the best photo angles.
  • Winter and spring skies are the clearest; August and September bring more clouds and storms.

What time is sunset in Cabo San Lucas?

Sunset in Cabo runs from about 5:35 PM in November to 7:08 PM in July. January sits near 5:56 PM, April near 6:40 PM and October near 5:54 PM. A sunset cruise leaves about an hour and a half before, so the light is still warm when you reach the Arch and the sky is changing color on the way back. Cabo stays on Mountain Standard Time all year, with no daylight saving. The planner picks the departure for your date, and our sunset cruise guide lists times and routes month by month.

The sunset route: around Land's End to the Pacific

Cabo faces south, so the sun sets over open water beside Land's End. The two-hour route leaves Marina Cabo San Lucas, passes the Arch and the sea lion colony on the rocks beside it, rounds the point past Divorce Beach and faces the sun as it drops toward Cabo Falso. It is 12 miles (19 km) round trip. On the way home the captain comes back through the bay with the Arch in silhouette and the lights of Médano Beach coming on.

Prices per boat with 16% tax included; the 15% crew tip is not included. The per-person figure is the boat price divided by its full capacity, rounded.

The Pontoon 38 takes eighteen from USD 869, the Bayliner 33 takes eight from USD 599 with a bow sunpad for two, and the McKinna 70 turns the sunset into dinner, with a chef and complimentary drinks served by the crew, from USD 4,499 for three hours.

How to choose a yacht for the sunset

For photos, the bow of the Sea Ray 55 and the flybridge of the Sea Ray 40 give the clearest angles on the Arch. The Azimut 45 has a flybridge sundeck as well, plus an air-conditioned salon for the ride back. For a couple or a group of friends on a budget, the Chaparral 28 gets you to the same sunset for the lowest price, with a Bluetooth speaker and a cooler; it has no head on board, which matters less on a two-hour cruise.

Winter evenings on the water are cooler than the beach, so bring a layer. Order a cheese board or a Mexican feast in the planner if you want food on board; on every yacht except the Azimut 70 and the McKinna 70 you bring your own drinks.

When the sunset is best

Winter and spring skies are the clearest, which is why the page marks November to March and June as the best months. August and September bring more clouds and the occasional storm, and the Port Captain closes the harbor only under a real storm threat; if that happens, your charter moves to another date or your payment comes back in full. From November to April the same route doubles as a whale route, with the watching done on the Pacific side outside the zone around the Arch.

Questions

Sunset cruise in Cabo: what people ask.

What time should a sunset cruise leave in Cabo?

About an hour and a half before sunset. Sunset in Cabo moves from about 5:35 PM in November to 7:08 PM in July, so a two-hour cruise leaves around 4 PM in winter and around 5:30 PM in summer. The planner suggests the right departure for your date.

Is the Pacific side rough on a sunset cruise?

There is more swell past Land's End than inside the bay. On a calm day the captain rounds the Arch and faces the sun on the Pacific side; if it is rough, you watch the sunset from the bay with the Arch in silhouette. Either way you see the sun drop into the sea.

How much does a private sunset cruise in Cabo cost?

From USD 519 for two hours on the Chaparral 28, which carries ten (about USD 52 per person with the boat full). The Sea Ray 40 is USD 879 and the Sea Ray 55, for fifteen, USD 2,129. Prices are per boat with 16% tax included; the 15% crew tip is not included.

Can we bring wine or champagne on board?

Yes. The yachts do not sell or serve alcohol, so you bring your own (18 and over) and the crew keeps it on ice. The exceptions are the Azimut 70 and the McKinna 70, which include complimentary drinks served by their crews. Cans and plastic travel better on deck than glass.

Can we see whales on a sunset cruise?

From November to April, often. The sunset route goes along the Pacific side, where humpbacks pass, and the captain keeps the distance the rules require. Whale watching stays outside the 2 km zone around the Arch set in the 2025 to 2026 notice, so the watching happens on the way out.
