The Arch of Cabo San Lucas (El Arco) is still standing. It is a granite arch at Land's End, the tip of the Baja peninsula, 1.2 miles (1.9 km) from Marina Cabo San Lucas, and the best view of it is from a boat. A 2-hour private charter that passes it starts at USD 519 / MXN 9,799 per boat, tax included.

What is the Arch in Cabo San Lucas?

The Arch is a natural opening in the granite at the end of Land's End, the chain of granite rocks on the edge of the bay of Cabo San Lucas. On one side is the Sea of Cortez. On the other side is the open Pacific. The water through the opening is where the two meet.

Next to it, on the same rocks, California sea lions haul out to rest. Lover's Beach and Divorce Beach are a short way back along the point, on a strip of sand that crosses it.

Land's End and the water around it have been a federal flora and fauna protection area since 1973. Boats pass and idle nearby, and captains keep their distance from the wildlife.

How did the Cabo arch form?

The rock is granite. It formed deep underground about 115 million years ago, in the Cretaceous period, as part of the same band of granite that runs north through Baja California. Later, when the peninsula pulled away from mainland Mexico and the Gulf of California opened, that granite was pushed up and exposed at the southern tip.

All that movement left the rock full of joints and fractures. Waves, wind and tides worked into those weak lines for millions of years. On the headland at Land's End, the sea carved a cave into one side. The cave kept deepening until it broke through to the other side, and the bridge of granite left over the gap is the Arch.

The setting helped. The calm Sea of Cortez sits on one side and the heavy Pacific swell hits the other, so the rock erodes unevenly. You can see the cracks running through the pinnacles on the ride out.

Did the Arch in Cabo collapse?

No. If you saw a post saying the Arch fell, it is wrong.

The rumor has come up more than once. After Hurricane Lidia in 2017, some reports said part of the Arch had collapsed. In 2019, local news carried stories about cracks in the rock and pieces of the cliffs that had broken off near its base, with warnings that it could eventually fall. Geologists do describe it as heavily fractured, and rock does flake off the formation over time.

The arch itself has not collapsed. It is there today, and every one of our routes passes it.

Is there sand under the Arch?

Most of the time, no. The base of the Arch sits in the water.

Every few years, though, the currents shift and sand builds up underneath it, forming a short-lived beach where people could, in theory, walk through the opening. Reports put it at roughly every four to five years, but there is no fixed calendar. It was widely seen in 2020, appeared again in October 2025 and was reported once more in July 2026. Each time, the sand washes away within weeks or months.

It is not open to visitors. In October 2025 the Port Captain (Capitanía de Puerto) closed the area to landings, flew a black flag and warned that captains who dropped people off would lose their permits. Navy rescue teams had already pulled tourists out of the water there. In July 2026 the marine resources fund (FONMAR) again warned that conditions at Land's End were extremely dangerous, and a black flag went up at Divorce Beach.

So if the sand is there when you visit, enjoy it from the boat. Your captain will not land you.

Year What was reported
2020 Sand widely seen under the Arch
October 2025 Sand returned; landings closed, black flag
July 2026 Sand reported again; FONMAR danger warning

Can you see the Cabo arch from land?

Partly. From Médano Beach and the marina you can see the rocks of Land's End across the bay. The Arch is far off and at an angle from there, so you don't get the classic view through the opening.

For that you need to be on the water. Boats come right up to it, close enough that you can see the waves moving through the gap.

How do you get to the Arch by boat?

Every charter boards at Marina Cabo San Lucas, downtown, except the Sea Ray 65, which meets you at Fisherman's Landing restaurant, by the Cabo Escape terminal. From there the Arch is 1.2 miles out, so you reach it in minutes.

The two hour route from the marina to the Arch and back.

The standard 2-hour Arch & Land's End route goes like this: Pelican Rock, the sea lion colony, the Arch, Lover's Beach and Divorce Beach, then back along Médano Beach. It is 4.7 miles round trip. Captains slow down and idle near the sea lions so you can watch without disturbing them.

On longer trips the Arch is the first stop before the boat heads up the coast to snorkel at Santa María Bay.

Route Time Round trip
Arch & Land's End 2 h 4.7 mi
Pacific sunset 2 h 12 mi
Santa María snorkel 4 h 15.5 mi
Santa María & Chileno 5 to 8 h 18.5 mi

The Arch at sunset

The late-afternoon light hits the granite and turns it gold, and the sunset cruise is built around that. The 2-hour Pacific sunset route passes the Arch and the sea lions, rounds Land's End and faces the sun as it drops toward Cabo Falso.

Cabo runs on Mountain Standard Time all year with no daylight saving, so sunset moves a lot through the year: roughly 5:36 PM in late November and December, and around 7:09 PM in early July. Check the month you're traveling in our trip guide before you pick a departure time. Yachts from the marina can stay anchored in the bay until 10 PM, so you can watch the town lights come on after dark.

Questions people ask

Did the Arch in Cabo collapse?

No. The Arch at Land's End is still standing. Rumors of a collapse have gone around after hurricanes, such as Hurricane Lidia in 2017, and in 2019 local news reported cracks and fallen rock, but the arch itself has not fallen.

How did the Cabo arch form?

The Arch is granite that formed underground roughly 115 million years ago, in the Cretaceous period. Tectonic stress cracked the rock, and waves wore away the weak joints over millions of years until a sea cave broke through the headland and left the arch.

Can you see the Cabo arch from land?

Only from a distance and at an angle. From Médano Beach and the marina side of town you see the rocks of Land's End, but the classic view through the opening is from the water, 1.2 miles (1.9 km) from Marina Cabo San Lucas.

Can you walk under the Arch in Cabo?
