The hotel

JW Marriott Los Cabos Beach Resort & Spa is a 299-room beachfront resort in the Puerto Los Cabos community, on the coast just outside San José del Cabo, Baja California Sur. It is about 33.0 km in a straight line from the Cabo San Lucas marina, where yacht charters depart, around 41 minutes by car without traffic, and longer at rush hour. Marriott opened it on November 2, 2015, with architecture by Jim Olson of Olson Kundig and the Mexico City firm IDEA Asociados.

The resort stands in the dunes of Puerto Los Cabos, on the coast east of San José del Cabo, and the Griffin Club inside it has its own private beach. Marriott's opening release does not say whether the sea in front is safe for swimming, so ask at the hotel; the resort has six pools, including sea water and infinity pools.1

History and curious facts

The story of JW Marriott Los Cabos Beach Resort & Spa

Marriott International opened JW Marriott Los Cabos Beach Resort & Spa on November 2, 2015, as a five-star beachfront resort of its JW Marriott brand. The project was designed by Jim Olson of Olson Kundig together with IDEA Asociados of Mexico City, with architecture inspired by local Mexican traditions and the desert; in Olson's words, the buildings were meant to frame nature. All 299 rooms and suites were planned with an unobstructed ocean view. Inside the resort sits the Griffin Club, a 45-room boutique hotel with its own private beach and pool, butler and chef service, private spa areas and a movie theater. The 21,000-square-foot Jasha Spa includes a modern temazcal, a Mexican sweat lodge, guided by a temazcalero. The resort opened with seven restaurants and bars, among them Café des Artistes by chef Thierry Blouet, the Mexican restaurant Úa and P'yote Rooftop Bar, and with more than 37,000 square feet of event space, including the 7,104-square-foot Sum-San amphitheater inspired by ancient Greek forums.

Things you may not know

  1. The name of the Mexican restaurant, Úa, means home in Cochimí, a language of the Baja California peninsula.1
  2. The resort has a hotel inside the hotel: the Griffin Club, with 45 rooms, its own private beach and pool, and butler and chef service.1
  3. Its art collection includes works by Jaume Plensa, Ursula von Rydingsvard, Jan Hendrix and Héctor Zamora, among other artists.2
  4. The open-air Sum-San amphitheater, 7,104 square feet, was designed after the forums of ancient Greece and hosts performances under the stars.1

Your yacht day

A day on a yacht from JW Marriott Los Cabos Beach Resort & Spa

JW Marriott Los Cabos is on the San José del Cabo side of Los Cabos, so the trip to the boat is the longest in this guide: about 33.0 km in a straight line to the Cabo San Lucas marina, around 41 minutes without traffic and more at rush hour. Even though Puerto Los Cabos has its own marina, your yacht departs from its dock in Cabo San Lucas. Our driver picks you up at the resort, takes you along the coast highway to the dock and brings you back after the trip; you pay the driver, and the transfer is priced by the zone assigned to the hotel. Because of the drive, a longer charter makes the most sense from here: a family outing with a snorkel stop, a corporate group day, or a sunset cruise with dinner in Cabo San Lucas before heading back. From December to April, whale watching is another reason to make the trip.
