Cabo vs Cancun: desert and two seas, or the Caribbean?
An honest Cabo vs Cancun comparison for travelers who want a day on the water: water, seaweed, whales, safety and price.

In this guide
Cabo vs Cancun comes down to the kind of sea you want. Cabo San Lucas is desert running into two seas, with whales from November to April and the Arch 1.2 miles from the marina. Cancun has warm Caribbean water all year but gets sargassum seaweed, worst from June to August. The U.S. State Department rates both at Level 2.
We book private yacht charters in Cabo, so we're not neutral on where you should spend a boat day. We've kept the Cancun side to facts we could check and left out anything we couldn't.
How are Cabo and Cancun different?
They sit on opposite sides of Mexico. Cabo is at the southern tip of the Baja peninsula, where the Sonoran Desert meets the Pacific and the Sea of Cortez. Cancun is on the Caribbean coast of the Yucatán peninsula.
| Cabo San Lucas | Cancun | |
|---|---|---|
| Sea | Pacific and Sea of Cortez | Caribbean |
| Water temperature | Roughly 68 to 75°F from December to March, warmer in summer | Roughly 77 to 84°F all year |
| Sargassum seaweed | None | About April to October, worst June to August |
| Rain | Desert climate, little rain | Rainy season May to October |
| Big wildlife | Humpback whales, November to April | Whale sharks, about June to mid-September |
| Day trips | Todos Santos, Cabo Pulmo | Cenotes, Maya ruins |
| U.S. advisory | Level 2 | Level 2 |
The landscapes look nothing alike. In Cabo, desert hills run down to the sea and end in the granite rocks of Land's End. Cancun is white sand and Caribbean blue, and its day trips run inland to cenotes and to Maya sites like Tulum and Chichén Itzá.
What does the water feel like?
Cancun's Caribbean water stays warm all year, roughly 77 to 84°F. You get in without thinking about it.
Cabo has more range. From December to March the water runs roughly 68 to 75°F, which is refreshing for a snorkel and cold for a long float. It warms up through the summer. Our trip guide has the month-by-month weather, and our guide to the best time to visit Cabo goes through each month for a boat day.
Cabo also has two kinds of shoreline. The bay side, facing the Sea of Cortez, is calm: Médano Beach and Lover's Beach are where people swim. The Pacific side is a different sea. Divorce Beach, right behind Lover's Beach, has big surf and a strong undertow, so it's for photos from the boat, not for swimming.
A boat shows you both sides in one trip. The 2 hour route runs from the calm bay around to the Pacific side of Land's End and back.

Is Cabo safer than Cancun?
Neither is officially safer. In the Mexico advisory the U.S. State Department reissued in May 2026, both Baja California Sur, where Cabo is, and Quintana Roo, where Cancun is, sit at Level 2, Exercise Increased Caution. Canada's travel advice for Mexico as a whole is to exercise a high degree of caution, with separate regional advisories. Both governments update these pages, so read the current version before you fly.
On the water in Cabo, the Port Captain (Capitanía de Puerto, part of the Mexican Navy) decides whether boats go out. The harbor closes only under a hurricane or storm threat or another extraordinary situation, and most closures fall between September and mid-October. If your charter date is affected, you get a new date or a full refund.
Every charter we book is run by an independent licensed operator, with a captain on board.
Cabo or Cancun for spring break?
Spring break mostly lands in March, and the two places feel different that month.
In Cabo, March still has whales, which arrive in November and leave by April, and it's one of the best months for a sunset cruise. The water is on the cool side of its range, so plan for a quick swim rather than an afternoon in the sea.
In Cancun, the water is warmer in March, and sargassum is usually moderate that time of year, before the summer peak.
If your group wants a boat day, Cabo makes it simple to keep everyone together. The Pontoon 38 takes up to 18 guests and has a water slide off the upper deck. Three hours is USD 1,269 (MXN 23,999) per boat, which is about USD 71 each with 18 people. We don't sell or serve alcohol on board, but guests 18 and older can bring their own.

What you see from a boat in Cabo
Most of Cabo's famous sights are rocks, coves and wildlife you reach by water, and they sit close together.
The Arch, El Arco, is the granite arch at the very tip of the Baja peninsula, 1.2 miles from the marina. The best angle is from the water, which is why every route passes it. On the rocks beside it is the sea lion colony, where California sea lions haul out and captains idle nearby so you can watch without disturbing them.
On the Pacific side, the sunset route heads toward the Cabo Falso lighthouse, built in 1905 above the dunes at the westernmost point of the cape. That route is 12 miles round trip in 2 hours.
For snorkeling, Santa María Bay is a sheltered horseshoe cove 6.7 miles up the coast, with reef along both points. It's worth the ride on charters of four hours or more, and every yacht carries snorkel gear.
Whales: what Cabo has in winter
From November to April, humpback whales come to the waters off Los Cabos to mate and calve, and gray and blue whales sometimes pass through as well. Our whale season trips run in that window, with January and February as the best months, on a typical 3 hour outing.

Cancun's headline animal is the whale shark, which gathers near Isla Mujeres and Holbox from about June to mid-September. If you're choosing by wildlife, the season decides: winter favors Cabo, summer favors Cancun. More on timing in our Cabo whale watching season guide.

Charters leave from Marina Cabo San Lucas in downtown. The standard 2 hour route is 4.7 miles round trip: Pelican Rock, the sea lions, the Arch, Lover's Beach and Divorce Beach, then back along Médano Beach. Prices are per boat, not per person, with the 16% tax included. The customary 15% crew tip is not included.

If you'd rather not plan food or drinks at all, the McKinna 70 includes a chef, a multi-course menu and complimentary drinks served by its crew, from USD 4,499 (MXN 85,499) for 3 hours. You can compare all thirteen yachts on the fleet page.
So which should you pick?
Pick Cabo if you want:
- Whales in winter, and the Arch any time of year
- Desert scenery and a Pacific sunset toward Cabo Falso
- A beach trip with no seaweed season
- Short boat routes, since every stop on the Arch route is within about 1.3 miles of the marina
Pick Cancun if you want:
- Warm water every month of the year
- Islands just off the coast, like Isla Mujeres
- Cenotes and Maya ruins as day trips
- Whale sharks in summer
If Cabo wins, our list of things to do in Cabo San Lucas covers the rest of the trip.
