Cabo San Lucas is a party town, and nearly all of its nightlife sits in a few blocks of downtown beside the marina. The big clubs run until 3 or 4 AM on weekends, the drinking age is 18, and you can walk between most places. The day part of the party is on Médano Beach, and most nights start earlier than you'd think, with sunset on the water.

We book private yachts out of the marina, so we see the first half of a lot of nights out. This guide covers the areas, the hours, what to wear and how to get home. We don't name bars or clubs, because they change owners and names faster than a guide can keep up.

Where is the nightlife in Cabo San Lucas?

There are three areas, and they're all close together.

Area What it is Busiest
Médano Beach Beach clubs, music, day drinking Midday to sunset
The marina Restaurants and bars along the boardwalk Sunset to about 11 PM
Downtown Bars and dance clubs a few blocks inland 10 PM to 3 or 4 AM

Médano Beach is where the party is while the sun is up. It's the long beach on the bay with the beach-club strip, 0.8 miles from the marina. Our Médano Beach guide explains how the clubs work.

Marina Cabo San Lucas is the middle of the evening. The boardwalk that runs around the docks is lined with places to eat and drink, and it's where most people have dinner before going out.

Downtown is the late part. The clubs and loud bars are packed into the blocks just inland from the marina, close enough that you can walk from one to the next.

San José del Cabo is different. It's about 20 miles east, roughly 30 minutes by car, and its evenings are dinner and a walk around the plaza. On Thursdays from November to June, the Art Walk keeps the galleries open from 5 to 9 PM.

How late does Cabo nightlife go?

Later than most visitors expect on the first night. As a rough guide:

  • Lounges and marina bars wind down around midnight to 1 AM early in the week.
  • The dance clubs get going after 11 PM and stay open until 3 or 4 AM from Thursday to Saturday.
  • Sunday to Wednesday is quieter, though spring break in March and the week between Christmas and New Year are busy every night.

Hours vary by venue and by season, so if a specific closing time matters, ask at the door.

What is the dress code?

Cabo is casual. At most bars, including the famous loud ones, shorts, sandals and a T-shirt are normal, and nobody looks twice at a group that came straight from the beach.

A few upscale clubs are stricter, mostly with men: long pants, closed shoes, and a collared shirt helps. Bring one outfit that would pass and you're covered for the trip.

Two practical notes. Evenings from December to February are cool enough for a light layer. And if your night starts on a boat, wear soft-soled shoes or go barefoot on deck, then change at the dock.

Is Cabo safe at night?

In the areas where visitors go out, yes, with the same habits you'd use in any city with a big bar scene. The marina, downtown and Médano are busy, lit and full of people until late.

As of mid-2026, the U.S. State Department listed Baja California Sur, the state Cabo is in, at Level 2, Exercise Increased Caution. Advisories change, so read the current one at travel.state.gov before you fly. Our is Cabo safe for tourists article goes through it in more detail.

What that means on a night out:

  • Getting home. The State Department advises against hailing taxis on the street in Mexico and recommends dispatched taxis or app rides. Uber works in Cabo San Lucas and San José. Otherwise ask the restaurant, club or your hotel to call a taxi, and agree on the fare before you get in.
  • Drinks. Order your own, watch them being poured and don't leave a glass on the bar while you dance.
  • Walking. Stay on the lit streets between the marina, downtown and Médano. If your hotel is on the corridor, ride back. Don't walk the highway.
  • The group. Decide on a meeting spot and a time before the first round. Phones die and clubs are loud.
  • Money. Carry one card and some cash, and leave your passport in the room safe. A photo of it on your phone is enough for most ID checks.
  • The ocean. Don't swim at night. There are no lifeguards after dark, and the Pacific-side beaches are dangerous even in daylight.

The drinking age in Mexico is 18. Open containers on the street are illegal, and although Cabo is relaxed about it, walking between bars with a drink in your hand can get you fined.

Why do so many nights start on the water?

The timing lines up. Sunset in Cabo falls between about 5:35 PM in late November and about 7:10 PM in early July. A 2 hour sunset cruise puts you back at the marina right as the restaurants fill up, a few minutes' walk from everything.

It also solves the problem of where a group gathers first. On a private boat it's only your group, with your own music and drinks, and nobody has to shout over a bar.

The usual order for a night goes like this:

  1. Board at the marina about 90 minutes before sunset.
  2. Pass the sea lions and the Arch, then watch the sun go down from the Pacific side or from the bay.
  3. Come back along Médano Beach as the lights come on.
  4. Dinner on the marina, then downtown.

Our sunset cruise guide has sunset times month by month.

What are the night rules on a private boat?

They're short, and it helps to know them before you plan.

  • Departures run from 7 AM to 7 PM, and yachts sail until 8 PM.
  • Yachts that leave from the marina may stay anchored in the bay until 10 PM. That's the option for dinner or drinks at anchor with the town lights in front of you.
  • The Sea Ray 65 meets you at Fisherman's Landing restaurant, by the Cabo Escape terminal, and has to be back by 8 PM, when the terminal closes.
  • We don't sell or serve alcohol. Guests 18 and over bring their own. The Azimut 70 and the McKinna 70 are the exceptions, each with complimentary drinks served by its crew.
  • The minimum charter is 2 hours, or 3 on the Sea Ray 55, the Sea Ray 65, the Azimut 70 and the McKinna 70.

The latest you'll be on the water is 10 PM, which is about when downtown gets going, so the boat works as the first stop of the night.

Bring cans over glass if you can, since decks move and people are barefoot. And pace it: sun, salt air and a rolling deck make drinks land harder than they do on land.

Which boat for a night out?

For a group that wants the party to start at the dock, the Pontoon 38 is the pick. It's a double-deck party pontoon for up to 18 guests, with a water slide from the upper deck, an enclosed head with a freshwater shower, and a cooler with ice.

Hours Pontoon 38, per boat Per person with 18
2 USD 869 / MXN 16,599 About USD 48
3 USD 1,269 / MXN 23,999 About USD 71
4 USD 1,619 / MXN 30,799 About USD 90

Prices are per boat, with 16% IVA tax included. The customary 15% crew tip is not included.

Three hours is a good length for a pre-party: time for the Arch, a swim off the slide while it's still light, and sunset. If you want to stretch it into the evening, ask about staying anchored in the bay until 10 PM when you book.

Smaller groups have cheaper options. The Chaparral 28 takes up to 10 and comes with a Bluetooth sound system, from USD 519 (MXN 9,799) for 2 hours. Our Cabo party boat guide compares the party picks, and the bachelorette page covers that kind of trip.

Planning the night

Pick the sunset first, then work forward. Check the sunset time for your dates, book the boat for about 90 minutes before it, and reserve dinner on the marina for half an hour after you dock.

Send your date, group size and hours through the planner. We reply within 2 hours, 8 AM to 8 PM Cabo time, and your boarding pass has your yacht's dock in Marina Cabo San Lucas and a map link, so everyone knows where to meet.
