The hotel
The Westin Los Cabos Resort Villas is a villa resort run under Marriott's vacation ownership program, on the Tourist Corridor near San José del Cabo, in the curved building designed by architect Javier Sordo Madaleno that opened in 1994 as the Westin Regina. It is about 21.5 km from the Cabo San Lucas Marina, around 24 minutes by car without traffic; at rush hour the drive takes longer. Since 2017 its former 243 hotel rooms have been 147 beach-facing villas.
Marriott describes the resort as having direct access to the beach and views of seaside cliffs. It does not say whether the water in front is safe for swimming, so ask before going in.1
History and curious facts
The resort opened as the Westin Regina Los Cabos; Sordo Madaleno's own project page dates it to 1994, with archive photos from 1993. The architect set a single curved wall across a natural crater, joining its two ends, so the building closes around a sheltered oasis of pools and gardens on one side and faces the open desert and sea on the other. A large gap breaks the curve: six stories high and about 45 meters wide, it works as a window to the sea, and the pools inside line up with the horizon through it. The main facade is a burnt umber taken from the local sand and soil, while the lower buildings are painted bold magenta. In 2017 Sordo Madaleno also led the renovation that turned the 243 guest rooms and suites into 147 villas, studios and two-bedroom units with kitchens, and the property now operates as a Marriott vacation ownership resort.
