The Cabo Art Walk happens every Thursday from November to June, from 5 to 9 PM, in the gallery district of San José del Cabo. It's free. The galleries behind the mission church stay open late, the main gallery street closes to cars, and people walk from door to door with dinner somewhere in between.
San José is about 20 miles from Cabo San Lucas, roughly 30 minutes by car, so most visitors staying near the marina make an evening of it. If you want a boat trip on the same Thursday, it fits before the drive, and the timing is laid out further down.
When is the Cabo Art Walk, and what are the hours?
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Day | Every Thursday |
| Season | November to June |
| Hours | 5 to 9 PM |
| Where | Gallery district, San José del Cabo |
| Cost | Free |
From July to October there's no Art Walk. The galleries still open on their regular daytime hours in those months, so you can visit them, but the street isn't closed and there's no event.
Cabo stays on Mountain Standard Time all year, with no daylight saving. If your phone is set to a U.S. time zone that changes in March and November, check the clock before you plan the drive.
Where is it? A simple map in words
You don't need a printed map. Start at Plaza Mijares, the main square of San José del Cabo, and walk toward the mission church at its far end. The gallery district is the group of streets behind the church. Álvaro Obregón is the main gallery street, and it's the one closed to traffic on Art Walk nights.
The whole district is a few blocks of low colonial buildings, so you can cover it on foot without a plan. Walk up Obregón, turn into the side streets when a doorway looks interesting, and come back down toward the plaza when you're hungry.
The streets are cobblestone and uneven. Flat shoes are the right call, and a stroller with small wheels will be hard work.

What is the Art Walk like?
It's a walk through open galleries on a warm evening. More than a dozen galleries take part, showing paintings, sculpture, photography and jewelry by Mexican and international artists. On many Thursdays the artists are in the room, and you can ask them about the work.
Some galleries pour a glass of wine or set out something small to eat. There's usually live music in the street, and vendors sell crafts and jewelry outside. Nobody pushes you to buy. Plenty of people come only to look, and that's fine.
It's a relaxed, dressed-up-a-little crowd: couples, families with older kids, people who came for dinner and wandered in. If you want a loud night with clubs, that's in Cabo San Lucas. Our comparison of Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo explains how different the two towns feel.
A few practical points:
- Bring some cash in pesos for street vendors and the smaller galleries.
- If you buy a large piece, ask the gallery about shipping before you pay.
- Book dinner ahead if you have a specific place in mind. Thursday is the big night in San José, and tables near the plaza fill up.

How long does it take, and when should you arrive?
Plan on two to three hours. An hour and a half covers the galleries at an easy pace, and the rest is dinner or a drink on the plaza.
The busiest stretch is between 6 and 8 PM. If you care most about the art, arrive at 5, when the rooms are quiet and you can talk to gallery staff. If you care more about the atmosphere, 6:30 is when the street is at its fullest.
| Arrive at | What you get |
|---|---|
| 5:00 PM | Quiet galleries, easy parking |
| 6:00 to 8:00 PM | Full street, music, busiest restaurants |
| 8:00 PM | Thinner crowd, last hour of open doors |
Where do you park for the Art Walk?
Parking is the one part that takes planning. The gallery street is closed to cars for the event, and street parking around the historic center fills quickly on Thursday evenings.
You have three reasonable options:
- Arrive before 5 PM and park on the streets a few blocks from the plaza, then walk in.
- Take a taxi or a ride from your hotel and get dropped near Plaza Mijares. This is the easy choice if anyone plans to have wine.
- If you're staying in San José's hotel zone, the historic center is a short ride away, so leave the car at the hotel.
From Cabo San Lucas, the drive is about 20 miles along the tourist corridor, roughly 30 minutes without traffic. On a Thursday evening give yourself 45 minutes door to door, plus time to find a spot.
How to pair the Art Walk with a private boat day
Every private charter we book boards at Marina Cabo San Lucas, at the other end of the corridor from San José. That makes Thursday a good day to do both: the water in the afternoon, the galleries at night.
The Art Walk season, November to June, also overlaps with whale season. Whales start arriving in November, and January and February are the peak, so an afternoon on the water in those months often comes with a few spouts on the horizon.
Option 1: an early afternoon boat, then the drive
This works in every month of the Art Walk season. Leave the dock around 1 PM for a 2 hour trip, or at noon for 3 hours, and you're back at the marina by 3. That leaves time to shower, change and reach San José for the 5 PM opening.
The 2 hour Arch and Land's End route covers Pelican Rock, the sea lions, the Arch, Lover's Beach and Divorce Beach, then returns along Médano Beach. It's 4.7 miles round trip, so there's time for a swim stop.
Option 2: a sunset cruise first, in the winter months
From November to February the sun sets early enough to watch it from the water and still catch the second half of the Art Walk. A 2 hour sunset cruise that leaves about 90 minutes before sunset is back at the dock around half an hour after it.
| Month | Sunset | Back at the dock | In San José by |
|---|---|---|---|
| November, December | 5:35 PM | About 6:05 PM | About 6:50 PM |
| January | 5:55 PM | About 6:25 PM | About 7:10 PM |
| February | 6:15 PM | About 6:45 PM | About 7:30 PM |
| March to June | 6:30 to 7:05 PM | After 7:00 PM | Too late, use option 1 |
In November and December that still gives you two hours of open galleries. By March the sunset is too late to do both properly, so take the early afternoon boat.

Which yacht fits this plan?
For most groups we'd suggest the Sea Ray 36. It's a 36 ft express cruiser for up to 12 guests, with a captain and deckhand, bottled water and ice, a cooler, towels and snorkel gear. Having towels on board helps on a day when you go straight from the boat to dinner.
| Yacht | Guests | 2 hours | 3 hours |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chaparral 28 | Up to 10 | USD 519 / MXN 9,799 | USD 709 / MXN 13,599 |
| Bayliner 30 | Up to 6 | USD 549 / MXN 10,499 | USD 799 / MXN 15,199 |
| Sea Ray 36 | Up to 12 | USD 659 / MXN 12,599 | USD 929 / MXN 17,799 |
Prices are per boat for your whole group, with the 16% tax included. The customary crew tip is 15% and isn't included.
For two people, the Bayliner 30 or the Chaparral 28 is plenty. Our couples page has the two versions people book most, a sunrise breakfast or a sunset for two, and either one leaves the evening free for San José.

A sample Thursday
- 12:45 PM: arrive at Marina Cabo San Lucas. You get the exact slip with your confirmation.
- 1:00 to 3:00 PM: the Arch, the sea lions, a swim near Lover's Beach.
- 3:00 to 4:15 PM: back to the hotel to rinse off and change.
- 4:15 PM: leave for San José del Cabo.
- 5:00 to 7:00 PM: galleries.
- 7:00 PM: dinner near the plaza.
We don't sell or serve alcohol on board, but guests 18 and over can bring their own. If someone is driving to San José afterward, keep that in mind, or take a taxi for the evening leg.
What if your trip doesn't include a Thursday?
The galleries are open on other days during regular hours, and the historic center is worth an evening on any night. The plaza, the mission church and the estuary trail are covered in our guide to things to do in San José del Cabo.
If you're still choosing dates, our sunset cruise guide has sunset times for every month, which helps you decide between the afternoon boat and the sunset one.

Questions people ask
What day and time is the Cabo Art Walk?
Every Thursday from November to June, from 5 to 9 PM, in the gallery district of San José del Cabo. It doesn't run from July to October, although the galleries keep their regular hours.
Is the Art Walk in Cabo San Lucas or San José del Cabo?
It's in San José del Cabo, in the streets behind the mission church on Plaza Mijares. San José is about 20 miles from Cabo San Lucas, roughly a 30 minute drive along the corridor.
How much does the San José del Cabo Art Walk cost?
Nothing. The street is open to everyone and the galleries don't charge admission. You only pay for what you buy, eat or drink.
How long should I plan for the Art Walk?
Two to three hours is enough to see the galleries at an easy pace and have dinner nearby. The busiest stretch is between 6 and 8 PM.
Can I do a boat trip and the Art Walk on the same day?
Yes. A 2 or 3 hour private boat from Marina Cabo San Lucas in the early afternoon leaves time to drive to San José by 5 or 6 PM. From November to February a sunset cruise also fits, because the sun sets before 6:15 PM.
