La Paz is about 100 miles (160 km) north of Cabo San Lucas, a drive of 2 to 2.5 hours each way on Highway 19 through Todos Santos. You can do it as a day trip, but you spend four to five hours of that day in a car or bus. If you want the islands or the whale sharks, one night in La Paz works much better.
La Paz is the capital of Baja California Sur and a quieter kind of town than Cabo. People make the trip for its waterfront, for Espíritu Santo island and, in the cooler months, for the whale sharks in the bay.
How far is La Paz from Cabo San Lucas?
| How | Time each way | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Car, Highway 19 | 2 to 2.5 hours | About 100 mi (160 km), toll-free |
| Intercity bus | 2.5 to 3 hours | Several departures a day |
| Car to Todos Santos | Just under 1 hour | 47 mi (76 km), the halfway stop |
Highway 19 runs up the Pacific coast from Cabo San Lucas to Todos Santos, then turns inland and joins Highway 1 south of La Paz. It's a free federal highway, with no tolls.
Todos Santos is the natural coffee stop. Our Todos Santos day trip guide covers what to see there if you want to break up the drive.
From San José del Cabo the trip is longer. You either cross over to Highway 19 first or take the older Highway 1 up the Sea of Cortez side.
Drive it in daylight. The road is in good shape but poorly lit, and animals wander onto it at night. In winter the sun sets in Cabo between about 5:35 and 6:15 PM, so a day trip means leaving La Paz by mid-afternoon.
Is there a bus from Cabo to La Paz?
Yes. Intercity buses leave from the Cabo San Lucas bus terminal and arrive at the main terminal in La Paz, with departures from early morning to early evening. The ride takes 2.5 to 3 hours, depending on stops.
The bus costs far less than a rental car, and it suits an overnight trip well. For a same-day return it's tight. Check the time of the last bus back before you buy the outbound ticket, and leave room for delays.
What is there to do in La Paz?
The malecón is where most visits start. It's a waterfront promenade about 3 miles (5 km) long, lined with sculptures by local artists, and it's known for its sunsets over the bay. One of the sculptures is a giant clam, a nod to the pearl trade La Paz was once known for.
Balandra, a shallow bay north of town, is the beach in most of the photos you've seen of La Paz. Entry is capped. As of 2026 there are two daily time slots, morning and afternoon, with no more than 450 visitors in each, and CONANP, Mexico's protected areas agency, manages access. Check the current system before you drive out.
The rest of what draws people is on the water, and that's where the time adds up.
Espíritu Santo island and its sea lions
Espíritu Santo is an island north of La Paz, reached only by boat. The archipelago was added to UNESCO's World Heritage list in 2005 as part of the islands and protected areas of the Gulf of California, and it became a national park in 2007.
Boats go for its coves and for Los Islotes, a pair of rocky islets at the northern end with one of the largest California sea lion colonies in Mexico. Authorized operators are allowed to put snorkelers in the water there under rules set by the park.
Two things to know before you plan around it:
- Los Islotes is closed to snorkelers and divers from June 1 to August 31, the sea lions' breeding season. Swimming with them is a September to May activity.
- The boat ride from La Paz to Los Islotes takes more than an hour each way, so island trips fill most of a day.
Add that to the highway and you easily get a 12 hour day from a Cabo hotel. It can be done, and it means leaving Cabo before dawn.

When is whale shark season in La Paz, and what are the rules?
Whale sharks feed in the shallow water of La Paz bay in the cooler months, and swimming with them is tightly regulated. SEMARNAT, Mexico's environment ministry, sets the season from October 1 to April 30.
Inside that window, outings only run when enough sharks have been counted in the authorized zone. For 2026 to 2027 the management plan requires at least six animals, based on CONANP's official counts, and with five or fewer no boats go out. The 2025 to 2026 season didn't open until November 3.
The rules in the water come from the whale shark standard, NOM-171-SEMARNAT-2018, and the bay's management plan:
| Rule | Limit |
|---|---|
| Swimmers per guide | 5 at most |
| Distance from head and sides | 2 m (about 6.5 ft) |
| Distance from the tail | 3 m (about 10 ft) |
| Time one boat stays with a shark | 30 minutes |
| Boats per day | 56 at most, in four shifts |
Touching, riding or blocking a shark is prohibited. Only permitted boats flying the official SEMARNAT banner may run the activity, so book with an authorized operator and expect a set time slot.
For planning, that means two things. Don't build a whole trip around whale sharks in October, when the season may not have opened. And because slots are assigned in shifts, you can't always pick the hour, which makes a same-day drive from Cabo harder to time.
Day trip or overnight?
Here is what a same-day visit looks like with only the town and one beach:
| Time | What you're doing |
|---|---|
| 6:30 AM | Leave Cabo San Lucas |
| 9:00 AM | Arrive in La Paz |
| 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM | Malecón, lunch, Balandra if you have a slot |
| 3:00 PM | Start back |
| 5:30 PM | Arrive in Cabo before dark |
That's six hours in La Paz for five on the road, and it leaves no room for Espíritu Santo. Swap the town for a whale shark outing and it still fits. Try to add the island as well and it doesn't.
With one night you can swim with whale sharks one morning and go to the island the next, or do the island and still have an evening on the malecón. If La Paz is on your list for the animals, stay over.
Our day trips from Cabo guide compares it with the shorter options.
What you can see without leaving Cabo
Part of what people drive to La Paz for is also in Cabo, minutes from the dock.
| Animal | In Cabo | In La Paz |
|---|---|---|
| Sea lions | At the Arch, all year, from the boat | Los Islotes, swim September to May |
| Whale sharks | Not on our routes | October to April, when open |
Cabo's sea lion colony is on the rocks beside the Arch, 1.3 miles (2 km) from Marina Cabo San Lucas, and every one of our four typical routes passes it. You watch from the boat, at the 20 m (66 ft) that CONANP advises, and the sea lions are there in any month. Our sea lion colony guide explains the rules.
Whales are a Cabo strength. Humpbacks start arriving in November and stay through April, with the peak in January and February. The official SEMARNAT whale-watching season ran from December 15 to April 30 in 2025 to 2026. The whale season page has the outline of a typical 3 hour charter.
Swimming with sea lions and with whale sharks is what La Paz has and Cabo doesn't. If neither is the point of your trip, you can save the drive.

Pairing La Paz with a private boat day in Cabo
Put them on different days. After five hours of highway nobody wants to board a boat at sunset, and the morning after a La Paz trip is a good time for something short and close.
The 2 hour Arch & Land's End route is the usual pick: Pelican Rock, the sea lions, the Arch, Lover's and Divorce Beach, then back along Médano Beach, 4.7 miles round trip. On the Chaparral 28, a 28 ft sport boat for up to 10 guests, 2 hours start at USD 519 (MXN 9,799).
In whale season, give it three hours so the captain has time to look for blows past Land's End. The Sea Ray 36 takes up to 12 guests with a captain and deckhand, and 3 hours start at USD 929 (MXN 17,799). The Chaparral 28 does the same 3 hours from USD 709 (MXN 13,599).
Prices are per boat for your whole group, with the 16% tax included. The customary 15% crew tip isn't included.

Planning it
Decide first whether La Paz is a day or a night, then book the pieces that have fixed slots: the whale shark or island outing there, and the boat here.
For the Cabo part, send your date, group size and preferred time through the planner. We reply in writing within 2 hours, 8 AM to 8 PM Cabo time, and you pay through a secure Stripe link once the date is confirmed.
