You can kayak in Cabo San Lucas, and the classic route is short: launch from Médano Beach, cross the bay to Land's End, land on Lover's Beach and look at the Arch from the water. It's roughly a mile each way. Go in the morning, when the bay is usually calmer, and stay on the bay side, because the Pacific side of Land's End has big surf and a strong undertow.

The paddle takes you past the busiest water in Cabo, so the rest of this guide covers timing, traffic, clear kayaks, and when a 2 hour private boat is the easier way to see the same places.

Where do people kayak in Cabo San Lucas?

Almost everyone paddles inside Cabo San Lucas bay. The water is sheltered by Land's End, and everything worth seeing is close. Médano Beach is the launch point. It's the bay's long swimming beach, and rentals and water sports operate along the sand.

From Médano you head southwest toward the granite of Land's End. The stops along the way are the same ones the boats use:

Stop From the marina What you do there
Pelican Rock 0.8 mi / 1.3 km Snorkel over the reef
Lover's Beach 1 mi / 1.7 km Land and swim, bay side only
The Arch 1.2 mi / 1.9 km Photos from the water
Sea lion colony 1.3 mi / 2 km Watch from a distance

Those distances are measured from Marina Cabo San Lucas. Médano sits 0.8 miles (1.3 km) from the marina, so from the sand the paddle to Lover's Beach is in the same range, about a mile, depending on where you put in.

Lover's Beach is the natural turnaround. It's a strip of sand on the Sea of Cortez side of Land's End with no services at all, so bring your own water and shade. A short walk across the sand takes you to Divorce Beach on the open Pacific. Look at it, take your photos, and don't swim there.

The Arch stands just east of Lover's Beach. Seen from a kayak at water level, it looks much taller than it does from a boat deck.

How long does the paddle take?

At an easy recreational pace of about 2 miles an hour, a mile takes around 30 minutes. Plan on half an hour each way for fit adults, and more with a headwind, a tandem kayak with a child, or stops to take photos.

A typical outing looks like this: 30 minutes across, time on Lover's Beach to swim, a slow look at the Arch and the sea lions, then 30 minutes back. Two to three hours in total is realistic, and it's a full morning if you add a snorkel stop.

Why mornings are better for kayaking in Cabo

Two things change during the day: wind and traffic.

The wind in Cabo usually builds after midday. On a kayak that means chop, spray and a harder paddle home, and the return leg is the one you do tired. Calm water is also clearer, which matters if you want to see fish under you.

Boat traffic grows as the day goes on. Between Médano and Land's End you cross the water that water taxis, glass-bottom boats, snorkel boats and private charters use to go in and out of the marina. Cruise ships anchor in the bay on port days too. In April 2025 the municipality agreed with water-sports operators to keep jet skis away from the shoreline and give each company its own zone, which helps near the beach, but the middle of the bay is still busy.

Is kayaking in Cabo safe?

It's a reasonable activity for most people who can swim, with a few rules:

  • Wear the life jacket the whole time, including at Lover's Beach if you go back in the water.
  • Stay on the Sea of Cortez side of Land's End. Don't paddle around the point to the Pacific. Divorce Beach has big surf and a strong undertow.
  • Don't try to paddle under or through the Arch. Waves wrap around the rocks, and in August 2026 Civil Protection raised black flags and closed the area under the Arch and Divorce Beach because of heavy surf.
  • Cross the bay as a group, in a straight line, and look for boats before you cross. A bright shirt or hat helps boat crews see you.
  • Keep at least 20 m (66 ft) from the sea lions. That's the distance CONANP, Mexico's protected areas agency, advises, and they're bigger up close than they look from shore.
  • Bring water, a hat and sunscreen. A kayak has no shade.

The water around Land's End is the Cabo San Lucas Flora and Fauna Protection Area, and CONANP charges visitors a conservation fee. It listed MXN 125 per person per day as of September 2026, with exemptions such as children under 12. Ask whoever rents you the kayak whether it's included.

What is a clear kayak, and is it worth it?

A clear kayak has a transparent hull, so you can see the water and the bottom under you as you paddle. In Cabo it makes the most sense on a calm, sunny morning over shallow reef near Land's End, where the water is clearest.

A few things to know before you book one:

  • Visibility depends on the day. Chop and stirred-up water cut what you see through the hull.
  • There's no shade, and the clear hull doesn't make the kayak any cooler. Go early.
  • The view is best in shallow water near the rocks, and that's also where you need to watch for swell pushing you toward them.

If seeing fish is the main goal, a mask and snorkel in the water at Pelican Rock shows you more than any hull will.

Kayak and snorkel at Pelican Rock

Pelican Rock is a rocky point at the foot of Land's End, inside the bay. Brown pelicans often sit on top of it, which is how it got its name. The water is calm and reef fish swim close to the surface, and divers report turtles, moray eels, guitarfish and snapper there, plus sea lions passing through.

It's also where glass-bottom water taxis and snorkel boats stop, a few minutes from the marina. If you tie up your kayak and get in, stay close to it and keep an eye on the boats arriving and leaving. You may also see visitors jumping off the rock, about 30 ft (9 m) above jagged rock. It isn't organized or supervised, and we'd skip it.

Our Pelican Rock snorkeling guide has more on what lives there and how to snorkel it.

When does a private boat make more sense than a kayak?

The kayak route and the shortest boat route visit the same places. Our 2 hour Arch & Land's End route goes to Pelican Rock, the sea lions, the Arch, Lover's Beach and Divorce Beach, then back along Médano Beach, 4.7 miles (7.6 km) round trip. A boat is usually the better pick when:

  • Your group has kids or people who don't paddle much. On a boat they ride, swim when they want and rest in the shade.
  • You want the Pacific side. A boat can show you Divorce Beach and the open coast from the water, which a kayak shouldn't attempt.
  • The only free time you have is the afternoon, when the wind is up.
  • You'd rather spend your energy snorkeling than paddling a mile into a headwind.

Pairing a kayak morning with a private boat

The two fit together well. Paddle Médano to Lover's Beach early while the bay is flat, then take a boat later in the day for the parts a kayak can't reach: the Pacific side, a longer snorkel, or a sunset at the Arch.

For a short boat leg, the Chaparral 28 is the simplest option. It's a 28 ft sport boat for up to 10 guests, with snorkel gear, a lily pad floating mat, a cooler and a Bluetooth sound system. Two hours start at USD 519 (MXN 9,799), and three hours at USD 709 (MXN 13,599). Split across 10 people, 2 hours comes to about USD 52 each.

None of our yachts carry kayaks. If your group wants something to paddle from the boat, the Azimut 45 Flybridge includes a paddle board, for up to 12 guests, from USD 1,249 (MXN 23,799) for 2 hours. The Sea Ray 55 has one too, along with a floating pool, a lily pad and a floating platform, for up to 15. Our paddle boarding guide covers where the board works best in the bay.

Every price is per boat for your whole group, with the 16% tax included. The customary crew tip is 15% and isn't included. For more on the beach where you'll land the kayak, read our Lover's Beach guide.

Planning your day on the water

If you're kayaking, rent early and be back on Médano before the wind picks up. If you'd rather see the Arch, the sea lions and Lover's Beach without the paddle, a 2 hour private boat covers the whole loop.

Charters depart between 7 AM and 7 PM, Cabo time, from Marina Cabo San Lucas. Send your date, group size and preferred time through the planner, and we reply in writing within 2 hours, 8 AM to 8 PM Cabo time. Once the date is confirmed, you pay through a secure Stripe link.

Questions people ask

Can you kayak to the Arch in Cabo San Lucas?

Yes. The usual route launches from Médano Beach and crosses the bay to Land's End, where the Arch sits 1.2 miles (1.9 km) from the marina. Stay on the calm bay side and look at the Arch from the water; the Pacific side has big surf.

How far is it to kayak from Médano Beach to Lover's Beach?

Roughly a mile each way, depending on where on Médano you launch. Lover's Beach is 1 mile (1.7 km) from the marina, so at an easy pace of about 2 miles an hour you should plan on half an hour each way.

What time of day is best for kayaking in Cabo?

Morning. The bay is usually calmer early, the wind tends to build after midday, and there are fewer water taxis and charter boats crossing the bay.

Is a private boat a better option than kayaking for families?

Often, yes. A 2 hour private boat covers Pelican Rock, the sea lions, the Arch and Lover's Beach, and starts at USD 519 (MXN 9,799) per boat for up to 10 guests on the Chaparral 28, tax included.
