On checkout day with an afternoon flight, the best use of the morning is a 2-hour yacht charter at 7 or 8 AM: the Arch, the sea lions and Lover's Beach, and you are back at the dock by 9 or 10. Leave your bags with the hotel, check out after the boat, and give yourself the full drive to the airport. The Cabo Sun puts the trip from Médano Beach and downtown Cabo San Lucas to Los Cabos International Airport (SJD) at 40 to 50 minutes, and says peak traffic can stretch it by 20 to 30 percent (The Cabo Sun, July 2025).
How much time do you really have on checkout day?
Work backward from the flight. Your airline sets how early you have to be at the airport, so check that first; international flights usually ask for more time than domestic ones.
Here is a worked example with a 4 PM flight, an airline that wants you there three hours early and a hotel on Médano Beach:
| Time | What happens |
|---|---|
| 7:15 AM | Walk or ride to the marina, be at the dock 15 minutes early |
| 7:30 AM | Yacht departs |
| 9:30 AM | Back at the dock |
| 9:45 AM | Back at the hotel, shower, finish packing |
| 11:30 AM | Check out, collect your bags |
| 11:45 AM | Leave for the airport (50 minutes, plus 30 percent for traffic) |
| 1:00 PM | At SJD, three hours before the flight |
That leaves an hour of slack spread across the morning, which is what you want on a travel day. If your flight is at 2 PM, the same plan breaks: you would have to leave for the airport around 9:45, right as the boat comes in. Move the charter to an earlier day.
Hotel checkout times vary, so ask the front desk about yours, and ask if a late checkout is possible. An extra hour in the room makes the shower and repacking easier.
Which charter fits a checkout morning?
The 2-hour Arch & Land's End route is the one. It leaves Marina Cabo San Lucas, stops at Pelican Rock, passes the sea lion colony and the Arch, looks at Lover's Beach and Divorce Beach, and comes back along Médano Beach, about 4.7 miles round trip. Departures start at 7 AM.
If you want to get in the water, the 2-hour snorkel at Pelican Rock next to the Arch is a morning trip with about 30 to 45 minutes of snorkeling. The CONANP conservation fee for the protected area is included in our price. Santa María Bay, the longer snorkel trip, needs four hours and is closed for snorkeling as of October 10, 2026, with reopening expected in November. Four hours is too much for a travel day anyway.
Good yachts for a short, early run, per boat with 16% IVA tax included:
| Yacht | Guests | 2 hours | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chaparral 28 | up to 10 | USD 519 / MXN 9,799 | Boards by Captain Tony's |
| Bayliner 33 | up to 8 | USD 599 / MXN 11,399 | Express cruiser, boards by Arte Surf |
| Sea Ray 36 | up to 12 | USD 659 / MXN 12,599 | Towels on board |
| Sea Ray 40 | up to 12 | USD 879 / MXN 16,799 | Flybridge, towels on board |
Towels matter more than usual on your last day, because your own are probably packed. The Sea Ray 36 and Sea Ray 40 include them; most other boats don't. A 15% crew tip is suggested and not included.

What do I do with my luggage?
Leave it at the hotel. A small day bag is all you need on board.
- Pack the night before, except a change of clothes and what you'll wear on the plane.
- Ask the front desk the day before whether they can hold your bags after checkout.
- Keep passports, phone, wallet and boarding passes in a small day bag that comes on the boat with you.
- Bring a plastic or dry bag for your wet swimsuit, so it doesn't soak your carry-on later.
If you are staying on Médano Beach or by the marina, you can walk to the dock. From a corridor or San José hotel, our round trip transfer takes you to the yacht and back to the hotel, where your bags are waiting. Prices are on the transportation page: for example USD 160 cash (168 by card) round trip in an SUV for up to 4 from Zones 1 to 4. You pay the driver on the day: the cash price, or 5% more by card on the driver's terminal. The transfer runs hotel to marina and back, so plan the airport ride separately.
How early do I leave the marina area for the airport?
The airport sits near San José del Cabo, at the other end of the Tourist Corridor from the marina. From Médano Beach or downtown Cabo San Lucas, The Cabo Sun gives 40 to 50 minutes and warns that peak traffic adds 20 to 30 percent. So a 50-minute drive can become 65.
If your hotel is on the corridor or in San José, the order changes: boat first, then the drive back to the hotel, then the airport. From the San José hotel zone the marina is about 30 minutes without traffic (Viceroy Los Cabos, for example, is 28.1 km from the nearest boarding dock in a straight line). That half hour is added before you even check out, so a 7 AM departure makes more sense than 8:30.
Cabo runs on Mountain Standard Time all year, with no daylight saving. If your phone is set to a home time zone, check that your flight time and your boat time are both in Cabo time.

Where do I eat breakfast before an early boat?
Captain Tony's, on the boardwalk across from the Pabellón Cultural, opens at 5:30 AM; Baja Cantina and Fisherman's Landing open at 7 AM (hours as of October 2026, confirm before you go). Our guide to breakfast near the Cabo marina goes through them.
You can also eat on the boat. In the planner you can order breakfast for the charter: chilaquiles and beans, huevos rancheros, French toast or banana pancakes at MXN 325 each, or yogurt and granola at MXN 325, cash prices (card adds 16%).

What else can I do on my last morning in Cabo?
If a boat doesn't fit, a few low-effort options near the marina:
- Swim at Médano Beach, the calm swimming beach on the bay.
- Walk the marina boardwalk and look at the boats.
- Pick up last-minute things at Puerto Paraíso, the mall on the marina.
Each of these lets you stop when you need to. The rule for checkout day is the same either way: nothing that can't be cut short.
When should I not book a boat on checkout day?
- Your flight leaves before about 1 PM. There isn't enough room for the boat, the shower, the checkout and the drive.
- You are flying with a big group. Getting 12 people showered, packed and into vehicles takes longer than you think.
- You are prone to seasickness and have a long flight ahead.
The weather is the other question. The Port Captain (Capitanía de Puerto, Mexican Navy) closes the harbor only under storm threat or extraordinary situations, and most closures fall between September and mid-October. If it closes, you choose a new date or a full refund. On your last day there is no new date, so you get the refund.
For the same reasons, our day-on-a-yacht itinerary suggests putting the main boat day in the middle of your trip. A checkout-day charter works best as a second, shorter outing.
How do I book an early charter for my last day?
Choose a yacht and a 7 or 7:30 AM start in the planner, and tell us your flight time in the notes. We reply within 2 hours, 8 AM to 8 PM Cabo time, and the date is confirmed in writing before you pay through a secure Stripe link. If you need the hotel pickup, add it in the same step and we confirm the vehicle and price for your zone.

Questions people ask
Can I do a yacht charter on the day I fly out of Cabo?
Yes, if your flight leaves in the afternoon. Book a 2-hour charter at 7 or 8 AM, the earliest departures, and you are back at the dock by 9 or 10 AM with time to check out and drive to the airport.
How long is the drive from Cabo San Lucas to SJD airport?
The Cabo Sun puts it at 40 to 50 minutes from Médano Beach and downtown Cabo San Lucas, and says peak traffic can add 20 to 30 percent. Plan for the long end.
What flight time is too early for a boat on checkout day?
Use our worked timeline: a 4 PM flight with a 7:30 AM charter leaves about an hour of slack. With a flight before 1 PM, skip the boat that day and book it earlier in the trip.
What happens if the port closes on my last morning?
The Port Captain closes the harbor only under storm threat or extraordinary situations. If it closes, you choose a new date or a full refund, and on your last day that means the refund.
